[xanga] hawaii, i’m old
yes, i’m back from hawaii. it was awesome. the main thing from my trip, besides the perfect weather and the fact i got to swim everyday and see awesome volcanoes, was that i got my advanced open water scuba diving certification. woohoo! i went on seven dives during the two weeks, got to see some amazing fish, lots of eels, sharks, and sea turtles. but no, no squirt from finding nemo… in any case, i’ve actually been back for a week and a few days, but i think i’m finally back on a schedule. i had major jetlag for awhile. i know i know, you want pictures. well, it’s unfortunate that i’m a lazy bum, because all the hawaii pictures are still sitting on the memory stick in my camera, waiting to be uploaded to my computer, which, i promise, will happen one day in the near, not-so-near future. there are some good ones (at least i’ve looked through them!), so don’t lose the anticipation! in the meantime, i suppose my summer in charlottesville’s finally started. two weeks in hawaii was definitely a break in reality. perfect weather, perfect beaches, perfect water, lots of scuba diving, etc. i get back with canker sores and a gazillion mosquito bites, it’s 110% humidity and superhot, summer school’s started, there are new people in the lab, the lab looks different (or maybe i forgot what the lab looked like), and of course i have 10,000 emails to go through in my inbox. but after getting over the initial why-the-freak-did-i-leave-hawaii phase (than helped a lot), i’ve actually been having a great time being back. basically, i’m starting new projects at work, which is nice because the last month or so of work before i left hawaii just concentrated on working through the small, annoying details of getting a paper published. in addition, even though i’m a natural lazy bum at heart, i’ve been trying to un-bum myself by actually going out and doing things… like playing tennis, taking walks/hikes, going to the gym… i managed to finally try dippin’ dots (which is pretty good!) and get back into my swing of bubble tea and slurpees. what i’ve been concentrating on the most is ultimate frisbee. i’m playing in the charlottesville summer league, and it’s quite fun, but i really suck and need to work on basically every aspect of the game if i want to feel like i know what i’m doing with the sport. i wasn’t excited at first when i had to buy cleats before my first summer league game, but since i found an adidas kids’ pair for $10, it’s all good. we’ll see how it goes! happy independence day this weekend! i’m not 100% sure what i’m doing, but most likely it’ll be setting off illegal fireworks with old HS mates on saturday and doing the same to compete with the city’s annual fireworks on sunday. i have monday the 5th off, but i may end up working anyway since i finally have so much work to do! and last but not least, i just finished watching jeopardy now. who knew that this dude ken jennings is an NINETEEN DAY champion? that’s just crazy. [edit] so i just went through a bunch of blogs, and blogs of blogs and blogs. i’m so OLD! class of 2009? 1986? what the freak?
