politics
if you’ve known me, you’ll know that i dislike politics. i don’t understand it, i don’t know anything about it, and i really don’t like politicians. but recently i’ve been in the middle of hot political discussions between friends who are very knowledgeable about this stuff, and i’ve come to realize that maybe i should at least think about it a little. i’m 23 and have never voted in any election. i wasn’t even registered to vote until just a couple of weeks ago (both rachel and than insisted). up until yesterday i was going to vote for “none of the above” because i don’t really respect kerry or bush, plus the fact that i don’t know anything about anybody’s policies, much less how the government’s run anyway.
but after last night’s debates, i think i realized a lot of things. mainly first, i do have opinions on many issues; second, i really should care who becomes president next. unlike the first debate, which basically was just a bunch of repetitive BSing on both sides about iraq/terror, this debate covered things that i actually care about: stem cell research, abortion, health care, etc. i’m not going to go into great detail about what i think about stuff, because i’m not here to mouth off my opinions (which in turn implies i want to impress my opinions on other people, which is something i really abhor, when people try to tell other people what to think). but i am going to say that while i still don’t like politicians, i realized that this election is important and that if i really feel strongly about something, i should utilize my right to vote for someone that represents my views the best.
and please, no political discussion comments. if you want to discuss politics with me, i might entertain you, only if 1. i can; 2. i feel like it; and 2. you’re civil and respectful - i.e. please don’t try to pursuade me in any direction unless you have objective facts and know what you’re talking about. just because i have limited knowledge about all this crappy political/government stuff doesn’t mean you can easily formulate opinions in my head.
on a completely different note, UVA ROCKS! this football season is turning out to be a blast. we’re ranked in the top 10 in both pollsa lot of people said clemson was our first real test. i disagree. clemson was a better team than our first four, but they’re not a really good team. now, florida state AT florida state - that is our first big test. we’ve basically won all our games so far by large margins, and i doubt we’ll be able to pull off a large-margin victory at FSU. we CAN win, but me being the pessimist, i’m not expecting a miracle. but it’d be SO awesome if we won.
who’s going to let me come over and watch their ESPN next saturday???
