I did it!
I went to a show all by myself. I have to admit it wasn’t nearly as fun as going with other people, but hey, I really couldn’t have missed it. Despite the extreme heat, smokiness and being trapped between people and their sweat, the show was really awesome. I’m not even that big of a Death Cab/Postal Service fan (but I do like their music a lot). And just like after every show I go to, I currently have a burning desire to play the guitar. That usually only lasts until I realize I’m not very capable, though, which isn’t very long.
Getting there: I got pretty lucky with parking - I did have to make a couple of rounds around 5th-8th streets (I almost got discouraged… I really hate looking for parking), but the second time I came around to 5th and Red River a car was pulling out of a spot. So yeah, I got to park a block away! Then I went to pick up my ticket at the venue, which was pretty much uneventful. I decided to walk to the library and back instead of entering the venue early - it was such a nice night for a downtown stroll, plus I checked out a couple of DVDs (Bowling for Concubine and A Beautiful Mind - can you believe I haven’t seen those yet?). By the time I got into the venue it was past 9pm and the 2nd act was on stage. [Side note: Jim Eno, the drummer of Spoon, was in front of me in line to get in! Tres exciting, I know...] It was pretty packed, and I had to squeeze my way into the crowd. One thing I learned is that I have to be more aggressive with my crowd positioning - this one girl kept beating me to all the spots because I’d hesitate and care too much about what other people would think. Oh well!
Thanks to those who sent me messages. They helped, for real.
I really need to get to sleep. Here’s a really crappy image from my really crappy camera phone of the show. This is just to document that I really did make it.
