Mexico, Thanksgiving

Posted November 22nd, 2007 in , , , , ,

The past week or so has been pretty surreal. I sat around for a few days and did nothing, and then I went to Mexico. I get back and start a new job, but my first week is only two days long. Now it’s Thanksgiving. First of all, how in the world is it already Thanksgiving? That means December is on the horizon, which means the holidays, Christmas, yada yada. I swear, time if flying by way too fast.

The trip to Mexico was awesome. I already want to go back. I got to see ruins and pyramids, and I met a lot of really cool people from Austin that I otherwise would probably never have met. And of course I got to play some awesome ultimate. It was really cool to play in a different country, although the high altitude definitely played a factor the first couple of points I played (I had never felt so winded in my life). Meeting foreign ultimate players was also awesome. It’s too bad I don’t know any Spanish, as there was a youth ultimate group at the tourney, and the kids kept trying to talk to me. I felt so bad not being able to communicate with them. Incentive to learn?… And of course, adding to the whole experience was the fact that both the women’s and men’s teams won the tournament. Handily. I am now a Mexican national champion.

So today I was supposed to run in the Turkey Trot 5-miler. I skipped out. I’m trying to fend off a cold, and I figured getting up early to run in a race wouldn’t help. It’s too bad, because I really did want to run it. Ah well. I did sleep in and rest though (and thus I feel much better), and I also took care of some errands. I’m heading to a Thanksgiving potluck later, and since I can’t cook at all, I’m bringing Duncan Hines brownies. First time making brownies by myself. I know, it’s pretty sad… and what makes it even more pathetic is that the mix only required two additional ingredients - oil and an egg - and I still had to go to the grocery! (I didn’t have any oil). I bought a bottle of wine in case the brownies go defunct, and I’m also bringing my Wii. That should make up for me and my pathetic non-cooking self.

As for the rest of the weekend… rest rest rest. Maybe some ultimate. Maybe some running. Football. Basketball. And the Tech game. Winner goes on to play BC in the ACC championship for a BCS bowl bid. Guess that’s a big deal. We can never beat Tech though, but I’ll try to stay as optimistic as possible. Both UVA and VT alumni are getting together at 3rd Base to watch the game Saturday, and I’m totally showing up to represent. If we end up being outnumbered I’ll be upset. SHOW UP IN ORANGE UVA FANS!

My first Thanksgiving by myself… I think I’ll be alright. :)
