Shows that I buy tickets for end up selling out?

Posted May 1st, 2009 in

At least this seems to be a trend. I buy tickets to shows way in advance, and about 90% of the time the show ends up selling out. Spoon, Cake, Death Cab, Ratatat… Spoon was obvious, maybe Cake also, but I really didn’t think/know the others would end up selling out. Anyway, I’ll let you know what tickets I buy next, if you want to know what’s going to sell out. :)

So tonight is the last leg of this current round of shows. This week was a bit more spaced out than last week’s back-to-back Spoon/Guster legs. Cake on Tuesday was great, although not amazingly awesome. While they did play two sets - “full sets” is questionable - the first set was around 40-45 minutes, and the second was 45-50. So in total they played an hour and a half at most, which really isn’t that much more than a band playing one full set usually. Plus, they ended early (10:10? 10:05?), didn’t play The Distance (which may not be my favorite Cake song… but really???? It’s a Cake concert!), and not a single song from Pressure Chief. Really, it’s all good though, because that means they played a ton of older stuff and the crowd was really into it, which made the show very enjoyable nonetheless. My theory is that the guys at Cake may be a bit jaded with the whole major music industry, as the lead singer made a few sly comments during the show - “we’re going to release our new album whenever and however we want”; “whatever happened to the 3/4 time signature” - and the fact that they’re on their own label now (much like Radiohead and In Rainbows). So basically, they’re doing whatever the hell they want to do, playing whatever songs… And that’s fine with me.

Tonight is Death Cab! I’m excited - I love their music, I’ve never seen them before, and it should be pretty interesting. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews about their live shows - stuff along the lines of “the worst live performers ever”, “that band should never be allowed to play” - so I guess I’ll get to find out for myself. I really can’t see how they could be that bad… I saw lead singer Ben Gibbard’s solo show at Emo’s a couple of years back and it was really, reallygood. We shall see…
