Apparently, Chicago is the place where my favorite bands like to play shows on New Years Eve. Four years ago, my first visit to Chicago and my first New Years outing outside of Virginia was highlighted by Guster playing a NYE show at the House of Blues. It was excellent. Guster was on stage when midnight hit.
Anyway, I just found out that Spoon is playing in Chicago on NYE this year. My first thoughts were to the awesome times I had four years ago, which naturally led me to think… “I could go… again!” Spoon on New Years Eve would…

Granted, I haven’t seen 18 Spoon shows like I have of Guster, but this was by far the best Spoon show I’ve seen to date (I’ve now seen them 5 times, if you count the Britt Daniel solo show). As I anticipated for a smaller show in their hometown, they played a fair amount of older material from A Series of Sneaks (Metal Detektor!!! Minor Tough, Quincy Punk). Starting last week, my life went from normal to absolute craziness. I went to Atlanta on a business trip from Saturday to yesterday. There, I conveniently got bombarded with a ton of last-minute work to do, in the midst of the training I was doing there *and* the fact that I was in ATL, not Austin! Of course, I get back, and ACL is this weekend. Oh, and don’t forget the Spoon show tonight! And the Lo Ya Tengo show Monday night! And lastly, UPA Sectionals! That’s right, I’m playing ultimate during ACL, too!

I just finished a 5.37-mile run. I can’t tell you how awesome I feel right now. This might be the first time I actually feel that I love running. I came home from work feeling extremely lethargic, sleepy, cold, and just plain blah. Instead of falling asleep in bed, I forced myself to get up and out the door, and I ended up running a sub-8:30 pace! And now I’m invigorated, re-energized! You’d think it’d be the opposite, right?
The winning formula: ultimate frisbee combined with running.
